Jesus returns

Revelation and Jesus’ return

The big idea: Jesus will come back, and God will make everything new.

The story

On the night before he died, Jesus made his friends a promise. He was going to his Father’s house to get a place ready for them. Then he would come back and take them to be with him.

After Jesus went back to heaven, a follower called John was on the island of Patmos. God showed him amazing things. He saw Jesus. His face shone like the sun. John fell at his feet. Jesus touched him and said, “Do not be afraid. I was dead, but now I am alive for ever and ever!”

John wrote that Jesus is King over every king on earth. Jesus loves us and died to set us free from our sins. One day he will come back with the clouds, and everyone will see him. He will put everything right.

Then John saw God’s new world, a new heaven and a new earth. A loud voice said God will live with his people. God will wipe away every tear. There will be no more death, sadness, crying or pain. God said, “I am making everything new!”

John saw a river, clear as crystal. It flowed from the throne of God and of Jesus, the Lamb. The tree of life grew beside it. There was a tree of life in the garden of Eden too. Because of sin, Adam and Eve had to leave that garden. But God’s new world will never be spoiled. God’s people will see his face.

The Bible’s big story began with God making the heavens and the earth. It ends happily, with God making everything new. Jesus died and rose again so that everyone who trusts him can live in God’s new world. Jesus says, “Look, I am coming soon!” We do not know when, but Jesus always keeps his promises.
