Stop 1 of 12 Old Testament
Creation
The big idea: God made everything, and it was very good.
The story
Before anything else, there was God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth out of nothing. At first the earth was dark and empty, covered by deep water. God’s Spirit was moving over the waters.
God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. That was day one. On day two, God made the sky. On day three, he gathered the waters into seas, and dry land appeared. He filled the land with plants and fruit trees. On day four, he made the sun, moon and stars.
On day five, God filled the seas with fish and the sky with birds. On day six, he made all kinds of land animals. Then God made people to be like himself, male and female. He blessed them and gave them his world to look after.
God looked at everything he had made, and it was very good. On day seven, God’s work was finished, so he rested. He blessed that day and made it a special, holy day.
Let’s go back and see how God made the first man and woman. God shaped Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed life into him. He planted a garden in Eden and put Adam there to look after it. God told Adam he could eat from any tree except one. God said it was not good for Adam to be alone. So he made a woman from one of Adam’s ribs. She was just right to be his helper.
Jesus, God’s Son, was already with God in the beginning. He is God too. Everything was made through him. Sadly, people would turn away from God and spoil his good world. But God had a plan. Through Jesus, he would rescue people and one day make everything new.
