Stop 2 of 12 Old Testament

The fall

The big idea: People disobeyed God, but God promised to rescue them.

The story

In God’s garden, Adam and Eve could eat from every tree except one. God said they would die if they ate from it. But a tricky snake told Eve she would not die. He said the fruit would make her like God. So Eve ate some, and Adam did too.

Then they saw they had no clothes on. They covered themselves with fig leaves. When they heard God in the garden, they hid among the trees. God called, “Where are you?” Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the snake.

Disobeying God spoiled everything. God told the snake someone from Eve’s family would crush his head. This was God’s promise to send a rescuer. Now life would be hard, and one day they would die. God made them clothes from animal skins, then sent them out of the garden.

Wrong things spread until people everywhere were hurting each other. This made God very sad. He said he would send a flood because of the evil. But Noah followed God. God told him to build a huge boat called an ark. Noah obeyed God.

Noah, his family and pairs of every kind of animal went into the ark. God shut them in. It rained for forty days and forty nights. All the other people and animals on the land died. But God kept everyone in the ark safe. At last the water went down, and they came out. God put a rainbow in the clouds. It showed his promise never to flood the whole earth again.

We all do wrong things too. The Bible calls this sin. But God kept his promise to send a rescuer. Jesus was born into Eve’s family. When he died and rose again, he crushed the power of sin and evil. He brings us back to God.
